I disabled the discrete GPU to get around the flip chip problem (not too difficult but took me a bit of research and I found a solution that still gives me brightness control, I just can't use a second monitor).Ģ012 is probably the best year for Mac in terms of replaceable parts but you can find real bargains for 2011 models due to compatibility issues. To sum up the hardware is fine, amazing value but software compatibility could become an issue. It's becoming harder to find compatible apps but there are still enough around for me. MacPro cheese graters are probably another good alternative. If I upgraded id probably go for a MacPro because you can still replace the hard drive, this is an important factor for me as I do audio. If you do the upgrades its amazing value. I'm using Chrome over Safari more now due to compatibility issues. The older it gets the more difficult it will be to run modern programs.

I may bite the bullet and upgrade to High Sierra in the future. I use Waves plug ins and have to stick with version 11. I have up to date reaper, guitar pro and Sibellius on it. I have to use a slightly older version of Logic Pro X. I use Macs fan control to keep the CPU cool and I replaced the thermal paste during the upgrade. I installed two 1TB SSDs, you probably would be hard to find that much storage in more recent computers with soldered in hard drives. I don't want to install High Sierra because I know the APFS file system with that causes a boot delay due to trim with SSD drives. Such a hub will probably be expensive between £50 and £100.
Be careful because when you search you will mainly find Thunderbolt 3 hubs which is no good. However it is difficult to find thunderbolt 2 USB hubs. I got an Elgato which means I now have three USB3 ports. If you want USB 3 you can do it with the right thunderbolt 2 hub.
I put 16GB of ram in but really 8GB would be enough. It has only integrated graphics which means it is not susceptible to the 2011 flip chip fault. I have a 2011 Mac mini Server which is quad core i7 2GHZ.
